Course description and aims

Learn concrete examples and prospects from the fundamental science based on the latest research topics in the field of materials and chemical engineering, mainly focusing on freshmen from the School of Materials and Chemical Engineering. It also aims at acquiring the attitude of study learning by gathering information themselves.

Class flow

This lecture is an omnibus format by six faculty teachers and introduces the latest research topics in Materials and Chemical Engineering as an example.

Class 1 Nanoscale properties and function of organic materials studied on the level of single molecules The aim is to understand the structure, optical properties and function of organic and polymeric materials on nanometer scales as investigated by microscopy and spectroscopy of single molecules.applications such as fuel cells and water electrolysis.
Class 2 Development of inorganic materials using supercomputers Understand current development of inorganic materials using state-of-the-art supercomputers, alongside "materials informatics", which is a new paradigm of materials science that deploys theoretical calculation and artificial intelligence technology.
Class 3 Metallic Materials Design to Achieve High Performance based on Crystal 􏰻tructure and Microstructure Control Understand basic principles of metallic materials design, for which functions and properties are drawn and modified through structure control on a multi-scale from atomic level crystal structure to micro and macroscopic "material 's microstructure".
Class 4 Composite materials used in chemical equipment and their Multi-functionality Understand the characteristics of composite materials (mainly FRP) used in chemical equipment, and introduce the concept of multi-functionality that leads to longer life and safe operation.
Class 5 Relationships between structures and properties of polymer materials Understand the relationships between structures and physical properties of widely used polymer materials (plastics).
Class 6 Construction of aromatic rings to synthesize optically active aromatic compounds Understand the relationships between structures and physical properties of widely used polymer materials (plastics).
Class 7 The end of term examination

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
