Course description and aims

This course aims to become a bridge between general education at high school and specialized education in the subjects of No.200 or higher. This course also aims to cultivate not only basic knowledge of engineering but also sense and attitude for problem solving so that the freshmen of School of Engineering can learn actively specialized subjects after sophomore.
By taking all Engineering literacy I-IV, the students experience the following all seven subjects in Engineering Literacy.
【Manufacturing process 】
【Mechanical Design (Idea Realization)】
【Mechanical Design (CAD)】
【Control】
【Wireless electric car with microcomputer】
【Communication, Computation, and Intelligent Information Processing】
【Management Technology and Mechanism Design (Industrial Engineering and Economics)】

Student learning outcomes

By completing this course, students will be able to:
【Mechanical Design (Idea Realization)】
1) Understand the basic knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, and apply them to actual problems.
2) Design mechanisms based on its principle, and improve it based on understanding actual phenomena.
3) Discuss and solve the problem in their group.
【Manufacturing process 】
1) Practice various manufacturing processes and machine tools.
2) Do basic works yourself.

Keywords

【Mechanical Design (Idea Realization)】
thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, problem solving, design, manufacturing
【Manufacturing process 】
manufacturing process, machine tool, safety, measurement, lathe, milling machine, drilling machine, bending machine, band saw, shearing, grinding

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

【Mechanical Design (Idea Realization)】
Principle of steamship propelled by energy of a candle flame is discussed and the ship is designed by each student. Using the movie of the commercially available steamships, principle of propulsion for the steamship is discussed by group discussion. In addition, the moving principle of stirling engine and its applications are studied. Furthermore, the paper airplane is designed and made by each student. Flying time and distance of the paper airplanes are competed with each other through the tournament.
【Manufacturing process 】
Students will practice how to operate machine tools and measuring instruments for produce machinery in order to learn fundamental knowledge and technique on manufacturing processes. In addition, safety training program will be given to ensure your safety on work. Guidance on practical works, safety training program, and fundamentals of measurement technique are given for all at once. Then, the students separate into four groups, and each group takes two practices among the following four practices in rotation.
A. Fundamental operation of lathe
B. Fundamental operation of milling machine
C. Fundamental operation of scribing and drilling machine
D. Fundamental operation of band saw and bending machine
Attendance is taken in every class.
