In the first half of the class, I will present background of elasticity and seismic tomography, the nature of anelasticity, and interpretation of heterogeneous structures in the Earth. Students will read a famous paper by Dziewonski and Anderson (1981) and understand the basic concept and underlying physics of Preliminary Reference Earth model (PREM).
Understand seismic heterogeneity in the Earth and the basic concept of PREM model that is widely referred to in the solid earth sciences.
