Course description and aims

Field work is important to understand geology. This course will first examine method for drawing geologic map and study geology of the field where students will visit. A two days field trip will be held in the Tanzawa area, where students will study tectonics of convergent plate boundary. The field works include observation of key outcrops and geologic mapping to understand igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary processes. After the field work, students will summarize the results, drawing the geologic map of the study area, and trying to reconstruct tectonic history based on the data obtained in the field.

Student learning outcomes

The students will acquire the method to identify rock and mineral, to do field mapping, and to draw geologic map. The students will understand geological phenomena caused by plate tectonics based on the observation in the field

Keywords

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Preparation for field work: geologic map and geology of Tanzawa area Dip & Strike
Class 2 Field trip day 1: Igneous, Metamorphic and Sedimentary processes Petrology, classification of rocks
Class 3 Field trip day 2: Tectonics of Convergent Plate Boundary Thrust fault
Class 4 Work after the field trip: Drawing geologic map Drawing geologic map based on acquired route map in the field
Class 5 Work after the field trip: Summary of key observation and tectonic history Reconstruction of the study area based on the geologic map and key observations.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京工業大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京工業大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
