Course description and aims

This laboratory course covers analog circuits using operational amplifiers to understand principles and characteristics of analog circuits required for geophysical measurements. Students will learn how to use measuring instruments, how to design and build sensor circuits, how to acquire time series data AD converter, and analyze time series data using a personal computer.

In Earth and Planetary Sciences, various kinds of data are acquired by measuring physical phenomena using various instruments. Students will learn principles and characteristics of instruments required to perform measurements and carry out data analyses.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to
(1) Use measuring instruments, such as an oscilloscope and a function generator.
(2) Design and build analog circuits, such as amplifier circuits and filter circuits.
(3) Carry out calibration tests for sensors.
(4) Acquire time series data using a personal computer with an AD converter.
(5) Analyze time series data using a personal computer.

Keywords

Physical measurement, Electronic circuit, Analog circuit, Data analysis
