Field work is important to understand geology. This course will first examine method for drawing geologic map and study geology of the field where students will visit. A two days field trip will be held in the Tanzawa area, where students will study tectonics of convergent plate boundary. The field works include observation of key outcrops and geologic mapping to understand igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary processes. After the field work, students will summarize the results, drawing the geologic map of the study area, and trying to reconstruct tectonic history based on the data obtained in the field.
The students will acquire the method to identify rock and mineral, to do field mapping, and to draw geologic map. The students will understand geological phenomena caused by plate tectonics based on the observation in the field
