Course description and aims

Fundamental aspects of organometallic compounds will be described first, and then application to synthetic organic reactions using these organometallic compounds will be presented. Initially, synthesis and reaction of main group organometallic compounds will be discussed. Then fundamental aspects of transition metal complexes on structure, oxidation state and ligands will be discussed. Then basic reactions of transition metal compounds will be shown, and application to various kinds of synthetic reactions such as coupling reaction, metathesis reaction, etc. will be presented. Students can obtain basic knowledge of organic reactions mediated or catalyzed by organometallic complexes.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to acquire basic knowledge of organometallic chemistry with emphasis on the application to synthetic organic reactions.

Assessment criteria and methods

Exercise problems, report, and final exam. Students' knowledge of organotransition metal chemistry along with its application to synthetic organic reactions, and their ability to apply them to problems will be assessed.
