The first half of this course introduces basic concept of physical chemistry necessary for understanding photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and chemical conversion driven by electromagnetic waves, in relation with solid state chemistry. Introduction of solid state chemistry is also given in relation with surface science leading to the application in solid catalysis in the second half.
Students will understand solid state chemistry in relation with basic physical chemistry important for understanding various phenomena included in the applications. Furthermore they will catch basic concept of surface science in the lecture about solid catalysis. Students are required to appreciate the important roles of various materials created on the basis of solid state chemistry, orienting the solution toward the energy source shortage.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) explain the relaxation processes of the excitation energy in molecules and semiconductors.
2) explain the working mechanisms of photocatalyst and solar cell.
3)explain chemical reactions on solid surface.
4) explain catalyst materials created based on surface science.
