Course description and aims

This course supports students understand the contents of "Organic Chemistry III" in the first
quarter of the same Academic year. In addition, we discuss experimental results from the course
of "Laboratory Course in Advanced Organic Chemistry". Solving exercise problems, drawing
organic structures and reaction mechanisms with curly arrows help students understand organic
chemistry in detail. Therefore, this course provides the opportunity that students draw organic
molecules by hands as much as possible and supports their better understanding of advanced
organic chemistry.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain advanced concepts of organic structures and organic reactions.
2) Explain advanced experimental methods for organic chemical reactions and the experimental results.
3) Explain spectroscopic analysis of organic compounds that are synthesized in the Laboratory Course in Advanced Organic Chemistry.

Class flow

In the first 20 minutes, the lecturer shows solutions for homework, and subsequently teaches main topics according to the course schedule. Then, students solve several exercise problems. In the last 10 minutes, commentary to the solution guide for the exercise problems are provided. In addition, we discuss experimental results from the course of "Laboratory Course in Advanced Organic Chemistry".

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students' knowledge of advanced topics of organic chemistry covered in the course will be assessed by final exam.
