Course description and aims

The aim of the seminar is to provide structure for the participating students’ research activities. The research is to be conducted on a theme determined through discussions with the academic supervisor. Students are expected to obtain a deep understanding of their research themes by reading related literature and giving presentations in the seminar. Open problems are identified and solved through consultations and independent research activities. Students are to learn how to develop theories and solve problems by applying specialist knowledge in their fields as well as fundamental knowledge of other related fields that they acquired throughout their training. They also learn research techniques such as collecting and analyzing data, and cultivate their ability to consider the same question from many perspectives. In addition, each student writes a thesis and makes a formal presentation detailing their research findings. Students are requested to take this course with "Graduate Research Seminars in Mathematics” in the same semester.

This course forms a central part of Tokyo Tech’s laboratory-based educational system, in which individual students work on specific research themes. This is complemented with coursework based on a structured curriculum. By carrying out research, it is expected that each student will increase their knowledge of their field and that they will acquire comprehensive skills to identify and develop solutions to newly emerging problems.
