Course description and aims

This course aims at introducing various technologies to pollution prevention and effective usage of water, air, rear metals and plastics from chemical point of view. Especially, the prevention of pollution by plastics, metals including rear metals, the effective usage of water are focused.

Environmental load reduction technologies are important to produce materials and energies. For understanding these technologies, not only the process approach but also reaction approach is important. The reaction and processes, which are important keys for the technologies, will be described.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand flows of plastics and water.
2) Understand the general strategy to dissolve the environmental problems.
3) Apply the development of novel materials and technologies to solve the problems.

Keywords

Plastics, recycling, bio-degradable plastics, CO2 absorption materials, water purification.

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Towards the end of class, students are given exercise problems related to the lecture given that day to solve. To prepare for class, students should read the course schedule section and check what topics will be covered. Required learning should be completed outside of the classroom for preparation and review purposes.

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Overview of environmental loading by chemical compound and degradation and recycling of plastics Understand the definition of basic problems of environmental loading by chemical compound and the definition of degradation of plastics and recycling of waste plastics.
Class 2 Bio-degradable polymers Understand the definition of bio-degradable polymers.
Class 3 CO2 absorption materials Understand the concepts of molecular and system design of CO2 absorption materials.
Class 4 Preparation of report Prepare the report about given problems related to the lecture.
Class 5 Water treatment technologies Understand general water treatment technologies.
Class 6 Desalination processes Understand desalination processes
Class 7 Advanced water purification Understand advanced water purification technologies

Textbook(s)

None required.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

Most materials used in class can be found on OCW-i.
Some course materials are provided during class.

Assessment criteria and methods

1) Students will be assessed on their understanding of environmental load reduction technologies for plastics and water, and their ability to apply them to solve problems.
2) Students’ course scores are based on report prepare in the class (80%) and exercise problems (20%).
3)The instructor may fail a student if he/she repeatedly comes to class late or resubmits reports too often.
