Course description and aims

Dojo for Science and Engineering: Introduction C is one of the fundamental contents of AGL's Dojo Program, and it aims to cultivate students' abilities such as recognition of problems in globalized society, skills and attitude for solving the social problems, and those for leading the innovation, based on the development of science and technology that brings a new value to the society.
Students cope with the social problem recognition and upskilling in collaboration with other students, whose major fields and/or nationality are different, in the belonging Dojo (Osumi Dojo or Saito Dojo) under the facilitation of the Master of Dojo, and enhance his/her abilities of communication, international awareness and consensus building at the same time. The abilities cultivated in this course are essential not only for the successive Dojo programs, i.e. Group Work and Completion Projects, but also for planning and accomplish the practical projects in the Off-Campus Program in AGL. These abilities are expected to be effective for the research activities in the major field.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
(1) Recognize the social problems, and have a sense of purpose and an attitude as a leader.
(2) Understand the developing state-of-the-art science and technology, and get the skill sets for applying the science and technology knowledge to solve the social problems.
(3) Propose ideas for applying the state-of-the-art science and technology to create innovation.

Class flow

Process of classes depends on the character of Dojo and the theme of each class, but generally it consists of discussion among students and invited lecturers including entrepreneurs, and/or workshop on the state-of-the-art science and technology.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students will be assessed on the achievement of the learning outcomes such as the understanding of state-of-the-art science and technology, proposing the ideas for creating innovation, and so on, as well as on the rationality of discussion and contribution of collaboration work.

Osumi Dojo: The goal of this dojo is to obtain entrepreneurship to create innovation into the society in the future. To this end, many entrepreneurs are invited, and students train themselves through the introductory course, group work project and completion project in the area of evolving IT and media.
Saito Dojo: Since the major part of this course involves practical 'Mono-Tukuri', students are required to attend and try.
