Course description and aims

United Nations passed a resolution about Sustainable Development Goals; SDGs, as an object to be accomplished by 2030, in Sep/2015. 17 goals and 169 targets were set by considering sustainable progress for the various kind of issues which could not be achieved enough by human being or had been realized recently. On the other hand, Japanese government presented future society as “Society 5.0”, the society adopting evolutional technologies such as AI, IoT robotics and big data as the target to be aimed by following Society 1.0 as hunting society, Society 2.0 as agriculture society, Society 3.0 as Industrial society, and Society 4.0 as information society.
ToTAL understands that recognizing and understanding issues which are occurred in current society widely including SDGs and in the field of academic, business, politics, technology and art would be the fundamental for the course of group of “Leadership, followership and consensus building” which aim for fostering capabilities to proactively solve such issues with no correct answers. As tools for such fundamentals; capabilities for communication, issue identification, consensus building, designing future society, and approach from macro points of view will be trained through a variety of workshops.
“Recognition of Social Issues Workshop B” are going to concentrate on capabilities relating approach from macro points of view and designing future society and aim to increase stocks of skills of students,

Student learning outcomes

Understanding social issues as a part of history, social trend and technology trend and learning and executing methodologies of macro approach and designing future society, so that students can expect to increase their stock of skills for consensus building.

Class 1 Details about schedule and contents will be presented in ToTAL web page/ToTAL OPEN Programs by the end of September while 2 kind of workshops below are being considered to be offered; (1) Policy making simulation Workshop: By referring actual policy in past, students are being requested to consider new policy by having supports from METI officers. (2) Future Foresight Workshop: Students are going to design future society of 10-15 years later by methodologies of scanning, back casting and abduction. Presented on site

Assessment criteria and methods

1. 50%: attendance to the workshop and pro-active attitude for idea generation and for contribution to consensus building
2. 50%: the level of logical acceptance about the solution(s) (ideas) to be presented as the result of discussion
