Course description and aims

Class time will be devoted to practicing effective delivery skills: posture, eye contact, gestures, voice inflection and the use of note cards. Furthermore, the instructor will focus on presentation structure and how to create and explain visuals. Students will study with other students of a similar skill level in a small class setting. The main objective of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to practice and polish their presentation skills in English.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. prepare and present a technical paper in a professional and interesting way.
2. change presentations depending on the purpose and audience.
3. work on a project or problem with other students using English only, find and discuss the best solution then present it as a team.

Class flow

The level of each student is evaluated by the instructor in the first class. Students are expected to be active and to take every opportunity to improve their skills. A large portion of class time will be used for presentations and the feedbacks from other students.

Course schedule/Required learning

Class 1 Self-introductions, and orientation. Discussion. What experience have you had with giving presentations, talking in public? What is the purpose of a presentation? What is the purpose of a paper? How are papers and presentations different? How does the language used differ? Students should understand the purpose of a presentation and how this differs from a scientific paper.
Class 2 Basic structure of a presentation. Demonstrate how to do something (not scientific) e.g., how to play a musical instrument or a sport, or cook something, etc. Also, demonstrate how to get to favorite place. Students should understand the basic structure of an English Presentation, as well as understand some of the techniques needed to give a good presentation.
Class 3 Sales presentation using comparison Also first General / Scientific presentations with questions from peers and feedback. Discussion of focus and relevant information. Students should understand how to emphasize or de-emphasize good or bad points, as well as understand how to select information to include or delete from a presentation.
Class 4 General / Scientific presentations with questions from peers and feedback. Also discussion of Poster presentations. Students will be expected to give constructive feedback on each other’s presentations.
Class 5 General / Scientific/ Poster presentations with questions from peers and feedback. Also discussion job interview presentations. Students will be expected to consolidate their own skills by giving constructive feedback to others.
Class 6 General / Scientific/ Poster presentations with questions from peers and feedback. Extension of job interview presentation practice. Some Final Presentations. Students will be expected to demonstrate the skill of thinking aloud, while maintaining audience interest.
Class 7 Final Presentation test. Review Student presentations will be evaluated. Questions asked by students will also be evaluated.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

No textbook is set. This course places emphasis on development of ideas and creativity, as well as practical presentation skills.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

Occasional handouts will be given.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students will be evaluated on how successfully they are able to prepare and present a technical paper in a professional and interesting way in a final presentation. As the instructor will also evaluate students each week, it is best to try hard every week and be as active as possible.
