Outline of lecture
This course is aimed at introducing a human-centered design approach, as taught in design schools, to engineering students.

Design is the innovative humanization of technology (ICSID). While engineering is focused on technology, industrial and product design mostly deals with the relations people have with technology, products and interfaces.

By the end of the course, the students will be able to :

identify design opportunities

get creative ideas

show ideas in 2D and 3D

evaluate design concepts

test design concepts with users
Purpose of lecture
In this class, the students will :
- develop an understanding of the design process of a new product
- improve their ability to identify a design problem
- learn creative-thinking techniques
- learn methods for collecting users' needs and for conducting user tests
- appreciate how design activities can impact people, society and environment
Plan of lecture
The course is a mix of lectures and design workshops, including the following activities:

Real-life Field Trip: to collect information about users by observations in real-life

Crazy Design Workshop: to generate crazy ideas of product concepts

Sketching Studio: to express ideas in 2D, sketches and storyboards, with pen display

Prototyping Morning: to express ideas in 3D with “quick-and-dirty”prototypes and 3D printing
