Outline of lecture

This practical course will provide students with an overview and hands-on experience on scientific publishing. In group work students will be assigned the roles of scientific paper authors, journal reviewers and journal editors and will follow the process of writing, peer-reviewing and editing of scientific work. Throughout the course the students will develop skills of critical evaluation of scientific research in cross-disciplinary fields, presenting and defending their ideas and concepts, and reporting research results in a form accessible to general scientific audience. The course will involve extensive homework assignments.

Purpose of lecture

To acquire advanced skills of critical evaluation of scientific research in cross-disciplinary fields, presenting and defending ideas and concepts, and reporting research results in a form accessible to general scientific audience.

Plan of lecture

May 25 (Monday) 5-6 period 13:20-14:50 Place: EEI-211
Lecture: Introduction and overview of the course; basics of scientific publishing and peer review process; the roles of authors, reviewers and editors; ethical guidelines of scientific publishing
Organization of the course: students will be divided into groups of 4-5. In each group, 1 student will assume the role of an author, 2-3 students the roles of reviewers and 1 student the role of an editor. As a homework assignment, the author will be asked to write a short paper (e.g., report on his/her recent experiments, etc.) introducing his work to a multidisciplinary audience. The paper will be passed over to the reviewers whose homework assignment will be to read the paper and write their comments. The comments together with the paper will then be handed over to the editor who as his/her homework assignment will read them and write an overall recommendation.

June 12 (Friday) 5-8 period 13:20 - 16:35 Place: EEI-211
Students will publically present their assignments as Power Point presentations. In each group, the author will introduce the paper, the reviewers will present their opinion, and the editor will summarize and make a recommendation. As homework assignments, the authors will then revise their papers, the revisions will be checked by the reviewers and final decision will be made by the editor

June 22 (Monday) 5-8 period 13:20 - 16:35 Place: EEI-211
The authors will explain their revisions, the reviewers present their opinion on the revisions and the editors their decisions. The papers may then be published internally as an issue of an ACEEES publication.
As homework assignments, students will be given papers related to scientific publishing.

June 29 (Monday) 5-8 period 13:20 - 16:35 Place: EEI-211
Students will publically present their assignments from the previous class as Power Point presentations.
