Outline of lecture
This course will be based on the new Tokyo Tech MOOC of the same name, which is launching on November 5th. Therefore, if you wish to follow the course at Bunmei Center, please come without fail to a brief course orientation on October 27th at CSWC at 11:00 A.M.
Purpose of lecture
Our Tokyo Tech MOOC plans to explore the balance between traditional Japanese architecture and Western influence starting with the introduction of Western building styles in the C19 through the influence of Le Corbusier in the mid-C20 and then up to the present day. It will also highlight several recent buildings here on the Tokyo Tech campus, featuring video-interviews with their designers.

Textbook and reference
There is no designated textbook as such since class work will be based on the MOOC lectures available each week on the Internet.
These can be watched as many times as you like, once you have registered at edX. (Note that the speed of delivery can be varied from slow to fast.)
Related and/or prerequisite courses
The new MOOC will be based in part on my The Making of a Modern Japanese Architecture: from 1868 to the Present (1987)/ pbk subtitle (2002): from the Founders to Isozaki and Shinohara. This book is out of print, but copies of it exist in the Main Library and Architecture and Engineering Library, if you wish to take a look.
Evaluation
Evaluation depends as always on full attendance and participation in seminar activities. There will be several writing projects or oral presentations, in English, but no formal examination.
Comments from lecturer
This seminar is designed to make you aware of the corpus of Modern Japanese Architecture, critically examined窶 and you will be asked to participate in the discussion. So you will have to be more than just an observer!

Of course, anyone may register for the MOOC at edX.org. However, if you wish to receive credit from Tokyo Tech, you will need to register for and participate fully in the CSWC Orientation and Seminar. Late registration will not be accepted.
