Outline of lecture

This will be a series of interactive reflections on the field today known as 窶忖rban design窶昶 which attempts to combine those of architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture in the aim of evolving and maintaining the well-being of cities worldwide.

It will focus specifically on the work and teaching of the Spanish architect Josep Lluis Sert, Dean of the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University from 1953-1969. (J. L. Sert was a disciple of Le Corbusier, and he was also the mentor of Fumihiko Maki, Japan窶冱 best-known Metabolist architect and urban designer, who recently completed a portion of the new buildings at Ground Zero in New York City.)

Purpose of lecture

First, please see "Related subject and/or stipulation" (below).

However, the CSWC course should be suitable on its own for a student from another related, or even from a nonrelated, major field, especially anyone intending to study abroad (i.e., one having a knowledge of written and spoken English, but wishing exposure to the way a class is conducted in English).

Plan of lecture

Seminars are scheduled to be held: OCT 14/ 21/ 28 and NOV 4/ 11/ 18/ 25 at 11:00 AM on the first or second floor of CSWC. Attendance is compulsory.

Textbook and reference

There is no designated textbook as such but readings are provided in the form of PDFs, printed materials, and emails from the instructor.

Related and/or prerequisite courses

This fall my 窶廛esign and Technology窶 seminar in the Department of Architecture and Building Engineering will be devoted to the post-World War II evolution of Urban Design practice and education in the United States.

While each student attending 窶廛esign and Technology窶 is encouraged to participate duly in both seminars, I intend 窶弑rban Design and Architecture窶 (CSWC) also to provide an independently focused introduction to the topic窶巴y exploring the influential thought and teaching of J.-L. Sert, an early urban designer among the foremost international modernists.

Evaluation

Evaluation depends on full attendance and participation in seminar activities. There will be several writing projects or oral presentations, in English, but no formal examination.

Comments from lecturer

This seminar is designed to make you aware of a certain body of knowledge that will be critically examined窶 and you will be asked to provide part of the critique. So you will have to be more than just an observer!
