Outline of lecture

This course aims to deepen the students understanding of the actual system of Japanese companies and industries through a series of study tours and lectures given by the staffs and the graduates of Tokyo Tech who work for Japanese companies and related organizations.
Participating students are encouraged to ask questions to the staff during the QA session in each lecture/visit but please refrain from asking questions which may sound rude to them.
Students are expected to submit a short report after each visit/lecture and a final report on the Japanese companies and industries at the end of this course.

Purpose of lecture

Plan of lecture

April 9 (Wed.) 12:15-45 Briefing on the outline and requirement of the course at W935, 3rd floor of West Bldg. 9.

May 16 (Fri.,) Visit to Shibuya Incineration Plant (No other class on the day for the preparation for the Suzukake-dai campus festival)
12:10 Gather at the entrance of O-okayama station

June 11 (Wed.) Visit to BRIDGESTONE Kodaira technical center
12:30 Gather at the bus parked near the West 9 Bldg. on O-okayama campus
14:30 Explanation on the outline of the company
Tour in the museum on rubber and tire
16:30-17:30 Q & A with the staff

Textbook and reference

There is no specific textbook in this course.

Related and/or prerequisite courses

Up to 9 regular graduate students will be accepted in addition to YSEP students. The selection of the class participants will be conducted at the course briefing on April 9.
The following students have priority in participation.
1. The students who have not yet participated in the SJCI or Factory Study Tours.
2. The students who can attend all the tours/lectures and submit all the required reports.

Evaluation

Visit/Lecture Participation 35%, Short reports 35%, Final report 30%
1. Class attendance and notice of your absence: Attendance is expected at all visits and lectures. If you will be absent from the visit, you are requested to inform it to the TA with the reason at least one week prior the visit/ with the title 窶廣bsence _ company窶冱 name _ your student number and name窶 at the following e-mail address: ysep.sjci #gmail.com

2. Short reports after the visit:
Students are expected to write a short report after each visit/lecture. The length of report should be from 80 to 150 words in English and be submitted to the TA within two weeks of each visit with the title 窶弖isit report _ company窶冱 name _ your student number and name窶 at the following e-mail address:
ysep.sjci #gmail.com
In some bus tours, the report sheet will be distributed in the bus and collected at the end of the tour.
3. Substitute report in case of your absence from the visit/tour
You can earn half of the attendance points for the visit from which you are absent by submitting a substitute report in more than 300 words in English regarding the company/organization of the visit within two weeks of the visit/lecture. It should be sent to the TA at the above address with the title 窶彜ubstitute report _company窶冱 name _ your student number and name窶
If you are absent from the visit without the prior notice, your points will be further halved even if you submit the substitute report.
4. Final report:
1) Topic:窶狼he strength and weakness of the Japanese companies and industries窶
2) Length: from 500 to 800 words in English.
3) Deadline: July 23th midnight (Late submission will decrease your report points. Please keep the deadline.)
4) Style: Please write your name, country and student number at the upper right corner of the first page of your report.
5) Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. If such an act is found, you will obtain no points for your report.
6) Submission: Please send the report to the TA by e-mail as an attached file. When you send your report by e-mail, TA will send you the confirmation of its receipt. If you don't receive the confirmation within a week, you are requested to contact TA and the teacher since the report might be missing. You can bring your report to the teacher窶冱 office (#206 of West 1 Bldg.) in that case.
