Outline of lecture

A typical enterprise in various industrial fields is visited, and a social, economical role of the enterprise is understood from actual factory. A factory study tour (FST) by bus in this semester is carried out in the afternoon of Wednesday once a month.
After the factory study tour (FST), the impression report is submitted and made in English. The course is conducted in English.

Purpose of lecture

The overall objective of this course is to understand the concept of advanced technology and system of a company/organization in the variety of fields around the area of Tokyo.

Plan of lecture

A series of factory study tour (FST) by bus in this semester is carried out in the afternoon of Wednesday once a month. You are expected to submit a report about each FST to Prof. Hirose and Ms. Tsuchida (tsuchida@ryu.titech.ac.jp) within 2 weeks after the FST.
Some of international students who are taking a subject of FST join in this tour with YSEP students. I will give YSEP students a chance to know other students of Tokyo Tech as well as YSEP students. A proposal that you would like to visit an advanced company is appreciated.

FST will be held 4 times in the semester intensively.

The date will be annouced as soon as a decision is made.

Textbook and reference

Rules and manners
Please keep the rule and manner as below, when you visit the factory. You may not get on the bus on that day, if you should not keep the rules.
(Rule 1) In case that you are going to visit a factory
1. Put on the low-heeled shoes. Sandals and mules is not available. In case of emergency, you should not interfere evacuating smoothly, due to the sandals and so on.
2. The woman must wear pants, neither the skirt nor the Bermuda shorts. They should not expose the leg skin.
3. Bring the shirt with long sleeves and the jacket even though you wear only the shirt with the short sleeve until entering the office.
4. Each one must bring socks because the safety shoes change when you enter the site.

(Rule 2) In case that you are going to a plant of the factory
1. Taking a picture is prohibited.
2. No cell phone is used while walking in the factory.
3. Please do not come close, while operating.
4. Please be careful for trucks, locomotives and so on in the plant.
5. Please keep the designated line in the factory.
6. Please do not touch the products, unless allowed.
7. Please do not put on your hands in a pocket, while walking.

Evaluation

Class Participation 50%, Reports 50%
Alternative report should be sent if you can not join it. Topics of the alternative report will be informed after the FST, though you have no score of class participation.

Participation:
1. Students are expected to read the material about a visiting company provided prior to attending each FST.
2. Students are expected to participate in discussion at Q&A session after FST.

Report:
3. Students are expected to send a report in which you write your own impression to Professor Hirose and Ms. Tsuchida (tsuchida@ryu.titech.ac.jp) within 2 weeks after the FST.
