英語による学術的文章を書くために必要な発想法,論旨の展開,効果的な表現手法を学ぶための演習を集中的に行う。
The aim of this course is to provide students at the graduate level with the basic skills required to produce well-structured and effectively written research papers. The formal requirements of written papers and articles for English language journals will also be covered.
Students will be guided and supported through the process of preparing and writing a research paper. We will spend sufficient time on reading scientific works in order to become familiar with appropriate style. Summarizing and paraphrasing will also be practiced. Such aspects as the structure of papers, elements of academic style, and documentation (footnotes and bibliographies), outlining will be dealt with. There will be class discussion of example papers and typical problems that are encountered in the production of papers and journal articles.
Required Textbook is Science Research Writing for Non-Native Speakers of English by Hillary Glasman-Deal
You will be required to have a sufficient level of English writing skills in order to communicate about scientific information in a clear and academic style.
Evaluation will be by a final individual paper (40%) and classroom participation, which will include submission of written work (summaries, paraphrases, outlines, notes,) during the semester (60%).
It is important that you attend the first classes. To get the most benefit out of this essentially practical course, regular attendance and active class participation are required. Pair and group work are how the class will be conducted. There will be at least two major presentations of students’ work and peer feedback are part of classroom participation.
