In order to carry out fundamental research on novel electronic, optical, and magnetic materials and devices, you have to understand the behavior of electrons in solids. This class aims at learning wave-like aspect of electrons in crystals, excitation of solids with low- (electrical) to high- (optical) frequency electromagnetic waves, and resultant optical properties of solids. Energy bands in the most advanced materials, in particular low dimension systems, will also be reviewed.
This year I would like to find out what are the subjects of intense interest for freshmen/women in the graduate school who are interested in advanced optical materials.
Three subjects to discuss :
(i) what is fundamentally the most important criteria for light
emission* ?
- E-k relation in crystals
- doping
(ii) why QW and QD are important ?
- excitons
- confinements
- quantum size effects
(iii) why light generate heat when it is absorbed in molecules
and solids?
- Interaction in 1 fs time scale
- 1 ps time scale
- 1 ns time scale
Materials cited from a few standard textbooks will be used together with milestones papers.
