Outline of lecture

This lecture will provide essential knowledge for students who are engaged in research projects related to materials and device developments, giving the representative examples of advanced electronics, magnetic and ferroelectric devices. Students may have other similar lectures in that they deal with solid-state physics for a general understanding of material properties, but rather this lecture focuses on device-oriented topics.

Purpose of lecture

The purpose of this lecture is to understand learning through case studies:
(1) How spin and charge degrees of freedom in carriers affect on materials properties and functions
(2) What are the characteristics of materials the devices require
(3) How important device processes are for their better performance
(4) How one can design material properties to satisfy such requirements, for each of various materials.

Plan of lecture

1.Semiconductor properties 1
2.Semiconductor properties 2
3.Semiconductor interface: junction and band profile
4.Semiconductor device 1: diodes
5.Semiconductor device 2: transistor
6.Basics of dielectric materials
7.Dielectric materials and their device application
8.Piezoelectric materials and their device application
9.Ferroelectric properties and their device application
10.Device applications of dielectric materials
11.Basics of magnetic materials
12.Magnetic recording and storage media
13.Magnetoresistance effect and magnetic sensors
14.Magnetic nanoparticles and medical devices
15.Spintronics
