Outline of lecture

This course is offered as a part of the International Program on "Effective Utilization of Technology" at the Graduate School of Decision Science and Technology. The lecture aim at teaching the cutting-edge endeavors of new scientific approaches to economic phenomena. The classical economics has built itself upon the foundation of "homo economics" with perfect rationality and unlimited computational might. In contrast, the 21st century's approach views economic activities as performed by homo sapiens -- ordinary humans like the readers. Therefore, economic performances are constrained by the limitations of human cognitive capability. Sciences embracing such assumptions are "embodied" in this sense. Currently, related branches include Behavioral Economics, Behavioral Finance, Cognitive Economics, and Neural Economics. This course offers a broad perspective of cognitive approaches to understanding preferential choice and judgment.

Purpose of lecture

This course introduces you the basics of ""Regret Theory"" as well as recent findings along the line on the theory. Regret Theory is an influential alternative to the ""standard"" expected utility theory, and is based upon rich psychological insights. This lecture outlines the essence of the theory, and cutting-edge findings on the basis of the basic idea, namely ""regret minimization.""

The first guidance meets on October the 15th, 2008 in the joint session of the 3 Embodied Economics Courses (Cognition, Language and Brain) to provide an overview of this course.
Lecture 2: General Introduction by Yamagishi. Room 202, West-9 Building, Wednesday December 17th, time TBA (To Be Announced)

As a start-up session, Yamagishi covers the basics of economic theories of choice. He will cover fundamentals of Expected Utility Theory, Prospect Theory, and Regret Theory. At the end, a short explanatory description in Japanese will also be delivered.
Lectures 3 through 5: Core Lectures by Reb.
10:00 through noon and 14:00 through 17:30, Room 202, West-9 Building, Tuesday December 23rd.

Professor Reb lectures on recent advances on the basis of the basic idea of Regret Theory, namely ""regret minimization."" His lectures will also include the cutting-edge research findings of his own.
Lecture 6: Wrap-up session by Yamagishi.
10:40 through 12:10, Room 202, West-9 Building, Wednesday January 7th.

Yamagishi offers a wrap-up session. This is basically a question-and-answer meeting and detailed instructions toward term-paper submission are offered. At the end of this session, a short ""debriefing"" in Japanese takes place.
