講義概要

This course is offered as a part of the International Program on ""Effective Utilization of Technology"" at the Graduate School of Decision Science and Technology. The purpose of the lecture is to understand the cognitive linguistics from the viewpoint of embodied economics.

The Embodiment Theory, which plays now an important role in cognitive linguistics, leads us to situate the language capacity in a more general theory of body and mind, action and perception, movement and imagery. The body-based approach in linguistics is founded upon biological substrates to profoundly understand the language capacity within a total range of human behavior, just as branches of the Economics (Behavioral Economics, Cognitive Economics and Neural Economics) are being oriented in this direction. In some trends of the Economics, the economic activities just like embodied language behavior are considered as if tossed by the waves of bodily states and feelings to gemerate irrational and emotional reactions. The language speaker is not a robot computer in which a perfect model of semantic processing is implemented. In the same sense, the human is not an ""Economic Man"" who always makes rational and logical decisions. Thus, we connot help asserting that Language behavior and economic activities are tightly related in the identical function of brain neural networks. There can be also found undeniable effects of language produced on decision-making processes and outcomes. Different resources that languages provide for describing strictly identical situations result in different attitudes and economic preferences for native speakers of those languages. In this course, we will propose a new research field that can be called ""Embodied Economics"" from the viewpoint of the synergy of different domains of human sciences: cognitive linguistics and decision science.

講義の目的

最近の言語学では、エンボディメント理論と呼ばれるものが大きく注目を集めつつある。これは、人間の言語能力を、体と心、行動と知覚、身体部位の運動とイメージ想起の一般的な理論の中に位置づけるものであり、とくに意味処理を神経レベルでとらえようとするシミュレーション意味論がその代表である。言語学においては、一方で、意味処理はコンピュータを利用した人工知能でもシミュレーション可能であるという考え方があるが、エンボディメント理論では、生物学的な基盤を持たないコンピュータは、意味処理に不可欠の「身体」や「感情」を持つことができない以上、いかなる論理的なモデルを駆使しても、人間の言語能力を模倣することは不可能であると考える。これは、「論理・物理・計算・合理性　対　生物・生命・感情・非合理性」という基本的２軸を中心としたパラダイムチェンジ（根本的発想転換）であり、様々な学問領域でそのような現象が同時多発的に起きている。

たとえば、経済学は、20世紀末に、完璧に合理的な選択をする「経済人」という大前提を問題とし、認知心理学の実験結果を踏まえて、感情に突き動かされ不合理な意志決定する新たな「経済人」像を提起した。行動経済学、神経経済学の誕生がそれに当たる。言語学の領域でクローズアップされつつある、「いかなる認知的プロセス、神経的プロセスが言語行動の背後で作用しているか」という問いも、経済活動において「いかなる身体的・感情的ファクターが意思決定を左右するか」という問いと、実は同根であると言える。

そのような大きな認識を踏まえ、本講義では、認知言語学の基本概念から、先端研究のトレンドに至るまでを紹介する。

講義計画

I. Introduction [by Prof. Akama] (Wednesday, October the 15th, 16:40~18:10, West-9 Building Room 202)

This introduction will take place on 15th October, 2008 in a joint session for the three Embodied Economics Courses (Cognition, Language and Brain) to provide an overview of cognitive linguistics and simulation semantics, especially from the perspective of the synergy of linguistics and other human sciences.
II. Cognitive Aspects of Lexicon [by Prof. Joyce] 12th and 19th November and 3rd and 10th December, 16:40~18:10, West-9 Building Room 202)

The primary objective of this course is to reflect on some of the organizational principles that underlie the highly structured and connected nature of the lexicon. To that aim, the first couple of lectures will introduce a number of effects identified within the visual word recognition literature and some of the influential models of the mental lexicon that seek to account for these effects, noting, in particular, the potential of connectionist models. The final couple of lectures will focus on word association. Given that association is a basic mechanism of human cognition, efforts to map out the rich networks of associations that exist between words are vital to attempts to identify and understand the structured relations that exist between concepts-a topic of considerable interest for various areas of cognitive science, such as psychology, cognitive linguistics, computer science, natural language processing, and artificial intelligence.
III. Simulation semantics [by Prof. Bergen] (New Year Session , Wednesday January 7th, 13:20~18:10 including the winter school session with Prof. Joyce, West-9 Building Room 202)

Simulation semantics, the understanding component of the language comprehension theory, is predicated on the idea that language understanding is contingent upon the understander mentally simulating, or imagining, the content of utterances. This simulation-based view of meaning grows out of theories of language and the mind in which embodiment plays a central role.

The study of how different aspects of language contribute to the construction of mental imagery, and the corresponding theory of linguistic meaning as linguistic specifications of what and how to simulate in response to language, is known as simulation semantics. Any success of a simulation semantics approach suggests that the meanings of words and of their grammatical configurations are precisely the contributions those linguistic elements make to the construction of mental simulations - thus, that grammar cannot be understood without being integrated with a system for performing semantic processing.

語彙（レキシコン）間の連合的関係とその構造について、基本的な理論を紹介する。第1,2回は視覚的な単語認識や脳内辞書モデル、コネクショニストモデルなどを扱う。

人間は言葉の意味を理解するとき、あたかも自分がその言葉の意味する現実の状況を体験するように、心と体が動いてしまう。シミュレーション意味論では、指の反応速度や眼の無意識的動き、脳内ニューロンの賦活などを通じて、そうした意味処理の身体的な基盤を明らかにしている。そのような認知言語学の研究例を紹介する。
