Outline of lecture

What is Language ?

Stored data of written documents or spoken words as in repositories, archives and memories? Modality of communication that serves functions of the body such as effectors, neural networks, brain ?

In any case, the salient feature of the language is its diversity. Compared with the gene information, the diversity of language is excessive. But the identification task ( for example, translation ) is considered relatively easy or possible.

Additionally, Language is simultaneously characterized by both arbitrariness and motivation. In linguistics, two conflicting viewpoints have been generated under the forms of modal-cognitive theory and amodal-computational theory.

The purpose of this course is to understand Language basically, to elucidate the phases of the conflict of viewpoints on Language and to introduce some recent leading works and the main trends in linguistics.

1.Cognitive Linguistics(1) What is the Meaning in Language? --Two Traditional Views
2.Cognitive Linguistics(2) Two thoughts in Linguistics --Amodal & Multimodal
3.Cognitive Linguistics(3) Calcutated Meaning vs.Embodied Meaning
4.Cognitive Linguistics(4) No Ending Confilct
5.Corpus Linguistics(1) A New Air in Linguistics ?
6.Corpus Linguistics(2) How to get Frequency Data
7.Corpus Linguistics(3) Programming Practices
8.Corpus Linguistics(4) From Variables to Variants
9.Corpus Linguistics(5) Data Mining --for Multiple Causalities
10.Corpus Linguistics(6) New Horizon to Computational Humanities
