Outline of lecture

Title:Topology and Dynamics 3-Dimensions.

Lectures will cover the following articles I have written:
-Trefoil Surgery, preprint.
- Visually building Smale flows in S^3, Topology & Its Applications, 106 (2000), no. 1, 1--19.
- Knot Factoring, Mathematics Monthly, April 2000.

Purpose of lecture

To learn a basics of topology and dynamics in 3-dimensions.

Plan of lecture

The lecture starts on January 8th 2013 and meets every
Tuesday 15:05-16:35 and Friday 13:20-14:50 up to
February 8th.

Textbook and reference

Some lectures may draw from the monograph:

Knots and Links in Three-Dimensional Flows
R. W. Ghrist, P. J. Holmes, M. C. Sullivan
Lecture Notes in Mathematics, Volume 1654.
Springer-Verlag. 208 pages.
ISBN # 3-540-62628-X.

These can all be found free on line.

Related and/or prerequisite courses

Prerequisites: A beginning knowledge of topology as might be acquired in a real analysis course: continuity of functions and open, closed and compact sets.

Evaluation

To be discussed at the first lecture.

Comments from lecturer

Students may be asked to give voluntary short presentations.
