Outline of lecture

Welding and Joining process are the key technology of production, because almost all products are made of a lot of joints, for example, semiconductor devices, electric equipments, auto mobiles, air- and space- plain, buildings, bridges, etc... In this lecture, the welding and joining processed are introduced based on physics. Students will be able to understand that the processes are based on plasma physics, electric engineering, thermal engineering, fuid dynamics, mechanics, material science, etc... And in order to optimise the process, it is essential to design products consdering all of the field of engineering.

Purpose of lecture

This course aims at introducing systematic knowledge of welding and joining technology based on physics. Welding and joining processes are roughly classified according to dominant mechanisms. Related behaviors of the materials are expressed. Topics of recent technology are also expressed with recent movements of Asian, American and European Countries.

Plan of lecture

1. Introduction
2. Welding and Joining processes
3. Solid state bonding
4. Brazing and soldering
5. Fusion welding
6. Behaviour of Materials in Welding and Joining
7. Conclusion (for the design of joint)

Textbook and reference

Because no good textbook exists, the pdf files are prepared.

Related and/or prerequisite courses

Electro-magnetics, Themal engineering, Thermodynamics, Chemistry(Quantum mechanics), Mathematics

Evaluation

Attendance, Exercise, and Final exam. are all considered.

Comments from lecturer

Because enormous process are used in industry, the physics and the mechanism are most important in engineering. The lecture will be a help of students, who will design products or systems in the future.
