This focuses on the contribution of science and engineering to understanding and ultimately controlling environmental impacts at the national and global level. The lectures cover the evolution of environmental problems from the local to the global level from both the scientific and policy perspective. Its aim is to give the student a clear understanding of how important science and engineering is to the sustainability of human existence.

1. Course overview and introduction
2. Historical pollution problems at the local level- some illustrative case studies
3. Development of regional pollution problems-e.g. acid rain
4. The first major global issue - contamination by persistent chemicals
5. The second major global issue-depletion of the ozone layer.
6. The current major issue-global warming.
7. Climate change, International negotiations and game theory
8. Same as 7-continued.
9. Environmental impact assessment, strategic environment assessment
10. Sustainability and sustainable development
11. Technological solutions-sustainable energy, waste reduction, recycling, resource productivity
12. Nuclear fission and fusion and nuclear waste- Public acceptance and perception as a barrier to innovation.
13. Revision and review

PowerPoint slides distributed after each lecture. Background reading references and glossary also supplied.

成績評価

Short (five minutes) tests (30%); English speaking (20%); two written assignments (40%); attendance (10%).
