This semester we will analyze and try to evaluate the contemporary Japanese teahouse, sometimes referred to as “the spiritual fountainhead of modern Japanese architecture.” We will approach the topic in two parts:
I: A recent essay by Terunobu Fujimori, the architect and historian, in English, about “the development of the [traditional] tearoom and its meaning in architecture.”
II: Twenty illustrated examples of “how world-renowned Japanese architects are redefining this highly formalized and tradition-bound form.” This section comprises work by Fujimori himself and also by Arata Isozaki, Tadao Ando, Hiroshi Hara, and Kengo Kuma.
I hope we will also look at some contemporary examples from China, where the cult of tea― or “tea-ism”― first took root many centuries ago.
