Purpose of lecture

This semester we will analyze and try to evaluate the contemporary Japanese teahouse, sometimes referred to as 窶徼he spiritual fountainhead of modern Japanese architecture.窶 We will approach the topic in two parts:

I: A recent essay by Terunobu Fujimori, the architect and historian, in English, about 窶徼he development of the [traditional] tearoom and its meaning in architecture.窶

II: Twenty illustrated examples of 窶徂ow world-renowned Japanese architects are redefining this highly formalized and tradition-bound form.窶 This section comprises work by Fujimori himself and also by Arata Isozaki, Tadao Ando, Hiroshi Hara, and Kengo Kuma.

I hope we will also look at some contemporary examples from China, where the cult of tea窶 or 窶徼ea-ism窶昶 first took root many centuries ago.
