Purpose of lecture

窶弋raditional Japanese architecture窶 is an almost meaningless term. This semester is very short, but we will try to obtain an idea of several types of past Japanese building styles, or tsukuri (騾繧奇シ壹▽縺上j). Please see Chapter 2 of the text for an introduction to this topic.

First Assignment: a brief paper in English (please include illustrations and give sources, including Internet sources) examining the transition from shinden-style, to shoin-style, to sukiya-style building over the course of Japanese history.

This is a classic set piece of architectural history, and it窶冱 important to emphasize the main ideas and differences regarding: plan, structure, scale, and the overall texture of materials belonging to each. (Remember that there are no extant examples of shinden-style building. There is a certain transition internal to shoin-style itself, while sukiya is very diverse, but that is the whole point.)

Make sure you use software, such as Power Point or Microsoft Word that allows for an automatic English-language spell check tool.

Our discussion will be broad this term, but I hope also accurate.

We have already read and discussed Chapter 1/ 窶廢nvironment and Culture窶. You will also need to read Chapter 2/ 窶弋he Evolution of Japanese Architecture窶 through the section on Machiya. You may skip Japanese Temples, Shinto Shrines, and Landscapes and Gardens for now, but do read the section on Minka.
