WHAT you THINK you SEE, and What they SAW (and FELT):
an Edo-period "system of taste", The Structure of Iki (by Kuki)
This is a short text (in an English-language annotated edition)
recently retranslated. It comprises a set of J-vocabulary terms
in a simplified European philosophical context.
Reprint will be furnished.
First class will be held on APRIL 8th in Room # 405 of the
Midorigaoka No 1 Building (Kenchiku-to) on the Fourth Floor.
Please note also that there will be no classes:
April 29
June 3
July 22
I still have several copies of the print we are using in class. However, if you are Japanese or read Japanese,
there is a bilingual (facing-page) edition of *Iki no Kozo* in the same translation, with notes, by Professor Nara that we are currently using (Kodansha International, JPY 1,840.--). This is cheaper than the edition I printed from, which is English only, although the recent Kodansha version does not include the three supplementary essays by other authors. The latter are interesting but we shall not be using these anyway.
There also exists a concise Japanese-language version of the text in super-small format for about JPY 500.--
