Outline of lecture

=Acoustic Emission Testing in the context of Structural Health Monitoring=
This course provides an introduction to the Acoustic Emission Testing, as a powerful NDT method for detecting flaw and evaluating the structural integrity in real time. Course begins with the definition of the Acoustic Emission phenomena and method for flaw detection, as well as some properties of the different types of waves than can be recorded by the acoustic emission sensors. After that, the applicants will be introduced in the different parts of the measurement chain: sensors, preamplifiers, cables, filters and data acquisition system. Finally, data analysis including time and frequency (Fourier and Wavelet transforms) domains and source location principia will be addressed. Applicants will be also introduced to several true examples on software and some laboratory practice at the end of the lecture.

Purpose of lecture

The main purpose of this course is to give to the applicants a general overview of the Acoustic Emission Testing method. Nowadays this method is considered as a very powerful strategy for continuous diagnosis (Structural Health Monitoring) in many real applications, such as aerospace, power plants, industrial and chemical processes, transport, mines, pipelines, infrastructures, storage tanks and vessels, etc. The course addresses in a very practical way how this method can be used both in research and in service.

Plan of lecture

1. Acoustic Emission Testing. General aspects
2. Wave propagation
3. Equipment
4. AE signal processing
5. Source location
6. AE data analysis. True examples on software
7. Laboratory practice
