Purpose of lecture
This course is designed for students who have had little or no experience in English academic presentations at informal and formal levels.
There are three main components of this course: 1) Academic discussion and seminar; 2) Academic presentations using students' own research, and 3) Public communication.
At the end of the course, it is expected that students will be able to acquire the basic skills and strategies introduced in each of the three components, improve their oral and aural communication skills, and learn to apply the skills to formal and informal presentations and speeches with better overall academic competencies.
Plan of lecture
Weeks 1-4
Basic public communication (Prepared speeches/impromptu speeches/self-introduction/research introduction/short oral reports on current news, etc.)
Weeks 5-6
Laboratory-based academic speaking (Summarizing & presenting realistic academic papers/group discussion skills/Q&A/socializing with overseas researchers and students/debate, etc.)
Weeks 7-8
Learning from professional academic presentations (Internet & Ted.com presentation project)
Weeks 9-10
Computer-assisted presentation (Lab-report ppt/academic conference ppt/characteristics of ppt files in English/critiquing sample research ppt, etc.)
Weeks 12-14
Poster presentation (Preparation and presentation)

Evaluation
Students are required to keep a high percentage of attendance and to actively participate in class. Creativity and critical thinking are highly encouraged and valued. As cooperative learning is a crucial point of training, students will need to be willing to work with other classmates in various kinds of activities. Student participation and collaboration in class are also part of the final evaluation.
Attendance, attitudes, performance and collaboration with other students in class: 30%
Presentations: 50%
Homework: 20%
Students' self-evaluation and peer evaluation will also be considered.
Comments from lecturer
This course will be conducted mainly in English, but support in Japanese is available whenever necessary. Students should try to inform the professor of their absences in advance and to avoid causing inconveniences to other members of the class especially when collaboration is required.
