講義の目的

This course is designed for students who have had some experiences in academic presentations in English.
There are three main components of this course: 1) Persuasive speeches and Public Speaking; 2) Academic presentations in domestic and international contexts including poster presentation and computer-assisted presentation; 3) Students’ needs based learning and Book reviews. At the end of the course, students are expected to acquire the higher level strategies in the three components, better their management in English in the above contexts, and improve their confidence in using and managing English for various purposes

The component of persuasive speeches and presentation mainly introduces crucial aspects of logic in organization, argument evidence and language manipulation, and how to use apply the knowledge and skills of logical presentation to all aspects of presentations, social speeches and persuasive arguments.
In order to raise their awareness of better professional presentations and autonomous learning, students will be provided with opportunities to explore higher level presentations world-wide, such as in Ted.com.
This course’s main focus is on the academic presentations in domestic and international contexts, introduction of the skills of active participation and management of group discussions in academic contexts, how to obtain better delivering skills of short and spontaneous speeches in both academic as well social communication. Students will also be trained for better control of nervousness and non-verbal language and more accurate manipulation of language of both written and spoken forms.
The book review project helps students improve summarizing, oral report, and Q&A skills, e.g. more critical and more skillful at dealing with questions in Q&A.
This course will give student the opportunities to learn to identify personal strengths and weaknesses and to search for resources and methods to improve the problematic areas. The teacher will participate in this process in order to help students.

成績評価

Students are required to keep a high percentage of attendance and to actively participate in class. Creativity and critical thinking are highly encouraged and valued. As cooperative learning is a crucial point of training, students will need to be willing to work with other classmates in various kinds of activities. Student participation and collaboration in class are also part of the final evaluation.
Attendance, attitude, performance and collaboration with other students in class: 30%
Presentations: 50%
Homework: 20%
Students' self-evaluation and peer evaluation will also be considered.

担当教員の一言

This course will be conducted mainly in English, but support in Japanese is available whenever necessary. Students should try to inform the professor of their absences in advance and to avoid causing inconveniences to other members of the class especially when collaboration is required.
