講義概要

研究成果を英語を用いて口頭発表・討論するための技術を学ぶ。

講義の目的

This course is designed for students who have had little or no
experience in English academic presentation at informal and formal levels. There are three main components of this course: academic discussion and seminar, academic presentations using students' own research, and public communication. At the end of the course, it is expected that students will be able to acquire the basic strategies introduced in each of the three components and improve their presentation skills and management in English as well as their overall academic competencies.

講義計画

This first component of the course, academic discussion and seminar, will introduce the basic skills of group discussion, genres of short and spontaneous report-like presentations that are common learning and sharing activities in English, and other related academic strategies such as note-taking and outlining. This aspect of the course will help foster the habits of active learning, self expression, and student autonomy. In the component of academic presentation, students will learn and practice how to conduct academic poster presentation and pc-based presentation in English. Students will be guided through the process of presentation, e.g. forming topics, summarizing research, outlining, drafting and language development, and delivery. Skills of making visual aids such as posters/power-point slides and critiquing/evaluation will also be covered. The third component of the course, public communication, will provide students with the opportunities to experience other types of public speaking and informal speeches such as impromptu speech and debate. Students are required to keep a high percentage of attendance and to actively participate in class.
