講義概要
The course focuses on improving students’ English skills mainly in reading, summarizing, writing and presenting logical and clear arguments.
講義の目的
The textbook consists of twenty chapters. Each chapter contains the following exercises to improve students’ English skills.
(0) Introduction to the topic discussed in the chapter
(1) Getting started (students are encouraged rewrite questions)
- Opinion-forming and reporting skills
(2) Reading (students are encouraged to prepare three to five True or False questions)
- Reading and comprehension skills; understanding the paragraph writing (topic sentence etc.)
(3) Vocabulary (students are encouraged to compile a comprehensive list of vocabulary)
(4) Comprehension questions - see (2)
(5) Summary - Listening practice
+ writing essays on topics related to the content of the textbook
講義計画
We aim to study one chapter in one lesson. The lesson begins by (1) in which students ask the questions they prepare to their partner and write a short report on the discussion. Then, we move on to (3) to check new words and vocabulary. Students are encouraged to ask questions about the words and expressions they could not find in their dictionary. This is followed by (2) and (4). In a small group students go through (4) and True or False questions they prepare at home and identify passages and sentences that are not clear. After the tutor follow up on students’ question (and if time allows, we work on (5)), students write a short essay. This plan is subjected to change depending on the progress of the class.
