The course focuses mainly on listening and presentation skills. By using the textbook, students practice listening to reports on science-related topics where some specialized terms are used. The course also introduces students to basic essay writing and presentation skills to help them prepare a good presentation. In the second half of the semester, students give some presentations.
Aims of the course is to improve students’ four skills in English. Students will work on their listening skills and build on their vocabulary as well as getting to know effective writing and presentation skills and practice them in class.
The textbook consists of the following six sections: (1) Vocabulary; (2) Summary Check (1st listening) True or False; (3) 2nd listening & True or False; (4) Vocabulary Building; (5) Useful Expression; (6) Translation.
The class begins by checking the answers to questions in (1), (4), (5) and (6) to learn new words and expressions used in news report. Please work on these four sections at home. Then, students listen to the report without the script for the first time and listen again with the script to fill in the gaps.
As for the presentation skills, handouts are distributed in class.
