講義概要

In this course the emphasis will be on listening and speaking, and the latter skill in particular will be assessed in the compulsory class presentations and the final test. The in-class speaking activities will mostly be conducted in pairs and small groups, so when selecting partners please consider their speaking skills relative to your own.

The textbook selected is at pre-intermediate level (the book series previously had an Intermediate level book, but it has been discontinued and is no longer available), but nonetheless as its title suggest the materials are designed to help you ACTIVATE the English patterns and vocabulary you have learned but can’t make use of orally (that is, in speaking and listening). Basic communication patterns on a wide variety of topics are included. A lot of class activity will also elaborate textbook materials, building them into extended small group discussions.

講義の目的

This course aims to increase your confidence in oral communication in English.

成績評価

In addition to three pieces of written homework, there will be two short (probably 3-to-5 minutes, depending on the class size) presentations to the class required - one in each of the first and second halves of the semester. The possible topics for those presentations will be introduced early in the semester. The final test will be in the form of a 1-to-1 interview with the instructor, who will ask you to answer a set of questions and/or speak on a particular topic. (The possible questions and topics will be provided beforehand so that you can prepare well.)
