Outline of lecture

"The Town and the Artist" - how do artists express urbanity? The theme of Modern Art Workshop B, is one of the main topics in Western Modern Art, beginning in 19th century Europe. Guided by artworks and artists we will travel from 19th century Paris to 20th century Berlin and New York and finally arrive in 21th century Tokyo. In the morning lectures I will introduce main artists and tendencies with a host of visual materials. In the afternoons the students will express their own view in different technics and media, by drawing, painting, collage, frottage etc.and producing a 3-dimensional object.
At the end of the course the students have the chance to participate in a group exhibition.

Purpose of lecture

The students have the chance to gain fundamental knowledge about Modern Art, historical backgrounds and main artistic tendencies and important artists. They will achieve practical knwoledge, mainly in 2-dimensional but also 3-dimensional art, using diverse materials and technics and expressing themselves in different creative approaches.

Plan of lecture

The class meets on four Saturdays, Oct. 18 / 25, Nov.8 / 15,
from 10.30 AM to 5.30 PM (One hour lunch break included)

"Firts Visions of Urbanity - Paris"

In the workshop the students will produce drawings and paintings, using photographs.

Oct. 25
"The Studio and the Streets - Berlin"
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and others
In the workshop the students will produce drawings and paintings, using a living model.

Nov. 8
"The Big City - New York"
Robert Rauschenberg and others
In the workshop the students will produce paintings, using the technics of collage and frottage.

Nov. 15
"Dreaming a Town -Tokyo"
Tomoko Takahashi and others
In the workshop the students will create their own vision of urbanity in 3-dimensional space, using diverse materials and technics.
