講義概要

In this workshop students will be introduced to documentary photography through slideshows with works by international professional photographers and they will be requested to produce a set of photos on a subject of their choice. During the classes they will be given guidance on how to improve their artistic sense, their composition, their use of color and storytelling via photography. Also they will be taught basic Photoshop techniques in order to edit their photos and prepare them for the final presentation at the end of the workshop.

An introduction to documentary photography and an invitation to join the adventure of documenting the world around us in a creative way.

講義計画

Lesson 01 (1.5 hours) (Friday 12th of April, 16:50-19.05)
Students should be advised in advance to bring samples of their photos so that I can see the level of their photographic skill. They can show me prints or they can give me some digital photos to look at via a memory stick, DVD, etc. They should show me maximum 10 selected photos each.
Introduction on documentary photography and on what we will be doing during the workshop. Examples of works by famous documentary photographers will be shown via a slideshow.
We will talk about ideas on projects that they students will work on throughout the workshop. The projects will have to relate to the students’ interests and sensitivity.

Lesson 02 (1.5 hours) (Monday 15th of April, 16:50-19.05)
I will talk about composition, color and light as means to artistically photograph the world around us while at the same time expressing personal feelings and ideas. Examples from international professional photographers’ photos will be shown via a slideshow.
We will decide on projects that the students will work on throughout the workshop.

Lesson 03 (7 hours) (Sunday 21st of April, 10:15-17:00)
Gathering at the university where I will talk with slideshow examples about composition and use of light in street photography, I will answer technical questions and I will explain in more detail the purpose of the day’s on-location photo-shooting.
The theme will be free. The goal will be to exercise in street photography and create interesting compositions while also trying to convey emotions.
Photo-shooting on location with the students. We will go to the area near the university. We will start taking photos together while I will be checking the students’ photos on their cameras. Later the students will do photos in the area for one hour by themselves.
I will be waiting at the class for the students to return and when they are back I will comment on their photos and we will select the best pictures. We will do some small corrections in Photoshop as I will be introducing basic editing techniques.

Lesson 04 (1.5 hours) (Tuesday 23th of April, 16:50-19.05)
I will present slideshows with examples of storytelling by international professional photographers.
We will discuss the projects that the students will choose to work on and I will give them ideas on what kind of photos they could do for creating a photo-feature that tells a story as they want to tell it.
We will look and comment on the pictures that the students produced in relation to their projects.

Lesson 05 (1,5 hours) (Friday 26h of April, 16:50-19.05)
I will talk about portraiture in documentary photography while also looking at examples from international professional photographers’ photos in a slideshow.
We will look and comment on the pictures that the students produced in relation to their projects.

Lesson 06 (7 hours) (Sunday 28th of April, 10:20-16:05)
Exercise in portrait photography on-location. The students will choose models among them and they will photograph them by using available light in locations inside the university.
The purpose is to learn how to arrange the people they are photographing and how they can use locations where the portraits are shot in a creative way.
(There will be a lunch break but the time will be decided on the day)

Lesson 07 (1,5 hours) (Tuesday 30th of April, 16:50-19.05)
We will talk about more adventurous/creative ways of photographing in documentary photography while looking at examples from international professional photographers’ photos in a slideshow.
We will look and comment on the pictures that the students produced in relation to their projects.

Lesson 08 (1,5 hours) (Wednesday 1st of May, 15:50-18.05)
Final selection of pictures that the students produced in relation to their projects.
We will talk about ways of presentation and how we will get organized for the next class, which will be the final one.
(for the next class the students will have to prepare simple captions for their photos and small introductory text where they will describe what their project is about. If they can they should prepare the text in English. If not they can prepare it in Japanese. Their names written in Kanji and in Latin characters should also be included.
They should bring the text in the next class in digital form with a memory stick or it should be sent to me before the next class via email)

Lesson 09 (7 hours) (Sunday 12th of May, 13:15-19:00)
Working with the students on the presentation of their works. Creating a sequence of photos, printing and setting up a photo-exhibition of selected photos from their finished projects. Printing of photo books on which we will apply simple binding.
(There will be a break but the time will be decided on the day)

教科書・参考書等

Photocopies with technical information on composition, samples of photos and on how to produce photos that will document an event will be provided to the students in the first lesson.

成績評価

Your grade for the course will be based on your participation in our class meetings and the work you produce for the classes. This, however, requires that you attend class regularly and also that you be prepared for class by doing any required research, shooting the required pictures and selecting the images to view in the class in advance. These you can bring on a CD/DVD or a memory card. 70% of your course grade will come from the effort you will put and the quality of work that you will be able to produce.

担当教員の一言

INSTRUCTOR: Photographer Androniki Christodoulou, a Tokyo-based professional photographer who is mainly documenting life in Japan and Japanese culture. Her work is published in international magazines and newspapers.
PRESENTATION: Digital presentations/projections with photos by international professional photographers will be presented in the class.
COMMUNICATION: Because of the limited time of this workshop and for making the most out of it, it is important that the students bring their work at the class for commenting regularly.
