講義概要

This course is designed to give students an understanding of the vocal and physical skills involved in delivering a successful presentation. Students will develop techniques to handle performance anxiety, give themselves authority, a confident posture and expressive voice. Focus will be on clear and dynamic direct address. Skills learnt will assist students to adapt to a range of communication contexts.

講義の目的

To provide students with the tools to successfully unlock physical and vocal tensions that interfere with good delivery. To encourage students to develop an awareness of personal communication styles and identify strengths and weaknesses. To provide a learning atmosphere that allows the students the freedom to explore chosen subject matter creatively with empathy, imagination and a sense of fun. To direct students to structure their presentations clearly for optimum communication of desired message and to maintain a balance between direct address and visual aids. To give the students the confidence to apply their skills in formal and informal situations.

講義計画

1.(Saturday June 9)
*INTRODUCTION TO COURSE - AIMS AND OBJECTIVES; HANDOUT DISTRIBUTED WITH DETAILED BREAKDOWN OF AREAS TO BE COVERED OVER THE FIVE SESSIONS.
*INTRODUCTION TO EACH OTHER - Getting to know about each other, exercises to facilitate sharing of personal information.
*EXERCISES TO FOCUS ATTENTION ON PHYSICAL AND VOCAL ASPECTS OF PREPARATION FOR GOOD DELIVERY OF PRESENTATIONS
 ・Body review to facilitate conscious awareness of unconscious tensions, leading to a sense of how these tensions may be affecting breath and voice
 ・Relaxation techniques - breathing, stretches, self-awareness and monitoring
 ・Body work - stretches, finding and sustaining alignment, developing a relaxed and stable posture
 ・Exercises to free the breath and develop support and stamina
 ・Breath into sound - floor work, then repetition sitting and standing to develop vocal strength and flexibility
 ・Increasing vocal range
 ・Shaping sound - articulation
 ・Using movement to free sound and explore meaning
*GESTURE
 ・Suiting the action to the word
 ・Exploring possible range of gesture
 ・Identifying personal style
*GROUP PRESENTATION
 ・Presentation themes - brainstorm possible subjects for group presentations based on needs/interests of students
 ・Assign areas of research and roles within the group

2.(Wednesday June 13)
*Warm-Up based on body/breath/voice work
*Words and pictures - short individual presentation based on personal/family photographs. Theme to be chosen by   student according to personal interest. School, holidays, relatives, childhood, or favourite song/piece of music.I love it because....
*POINTS TO CONSIDER:
 ・Did you greet the audience in a friendly way?
 ・Did you introduce yourself/others clearly?
 ・Did you have an attention-grabbing opening?
 ・Did you outline the purpose of your presentation?
 ・Did you work with commitment and imagination?
 ・Did you make a conscious effort to use your voice expressively, with warmth and connection to ideas and arguments?
 ・Did you maintain good eye-contact?
 ・Did you aim for brevity, clarity and succinctness?
 ・Did you pause before key messages?
 ・Did you look for humour?
 ・Did you summarise?
 ・Did you welcome questions?
 ・Did you conclude with key message?

3.(Saturday June 16)
*Warm-up based on body/breath/voice work
*Famous speeches as base for exploring voices in a range of contexts - students to have chosen a section, give a brief introduction and present with appropriate verbal and non-verbal language
*Evaluation
*Continue work on group presentations.

4.(Sunday June 17)

- Dealing with questions

5.(Wednesday June 20)
*Warm-Up based on body/breath/voice work
*Kenji Miyazawa - short individual presentation based on poem of choice. Elements might include biographical elements, personal response, analysis, audio/visual, performance etc
*Evaluation

6.(Saturday June 23)
*Warm-Up
*Continuation of Group Presentations
*Evaluation

7.(Sunday June 24)
*Warm-Up
*Spoken reflection on experience over five workshop days

Your grade for the course will be based on your participation in workshops. Emphasis in grading is placed on attendance, enthusiasm and creative effort.
