In this workshop students will be introduced to documentary photography through slideshows with works by international professional photographers and they will be requested to produce a set of photos on a subject of their choice. During the classes they will be given guidance on how to improve their composition, use of color and storytelling via photography. Also they will be taught basic photoshop techniques in order to edit their photos and prepare them for the final presentation at the end of the workshop.
An introduction to documentary photography and an invitation to join the adventure of documenting the world around us in a creative way.
Lesson 01 (Monday 9th of April, 9-10限 )
Students should be advised in advance to bring samples of their photos so that I can see the level of their photographic skill. They can show me prints or they can give me some digital photos to look at via a memory stick, dvd, etc. They should show me maximum 10 selected photos each.
Introduction on what is documentary photography and on what we will be doing during the workshop. Examples of works by famous documentary photographers will be shown via a slideshow.
Introduction to the basics of composition.
We will talk about ideas on projects that they students will work on throughout the workshop.
Lesson 02 (Monday 16th of April, 9-10限 )
I will talk about storytelling, composition, color and light while also looking at examples from professional photographer’s photos in a slideshow.

Lesson 03 (Saturday 21th of April, 全日 )
Photoshooting on location with the students
Free theme. The goal will be to exercise in street photography and create interesting compositions. I will be looking at the students photos and guiding them on the spot.
Lesson 05 (Monday 23th of April, 9-10限 )
We will look and comment on the pictures that the students have produced during the previous lesson.
Lesson 06 (Friday 27th of April, 9-10限 )
I will talk about portraiture in documentary photography while also looking at examples from professional photographer’s photos in a slideshow.

Lesson 07 (Saturday 28th of April, 全日 )
Different ways of dealing with the same story. The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and how it has been photographed.
We will look and comment on the pictures that the students produced in relation to their projects.
Lesson 08 (Tuesday 1st of May, 9-10限 )
We will talk about more adventurous/creative ways of photographing in documentary photography while looking at examples from professional photographers’ photos in a slideshow.

Lesson 09 (Monday 7th of May, 9-10限 )
We will look at slideshows with photos by professional photographers.
We will look and comment on the pictures that the students produced in relation to their projects.

Final selection of pictures that the students produced in relation to their projects.

Working with the students on the presentation of their works. Printing and setting up a photo-exhibition of their finished projects.
Photocopies with technical information on composition, samples of photos and on how to produce photos that will document an event will be provided to the students in the first lesson.

Your grade for the course will be based on your participation in our class meetings and the work you produce for the classes. This, however, requires that you attend class regularly and also that you be prepared for class by doing any required research, shooting the required pictures and selecting the images to view in the class in advance. These you can bring on a CD/DVD or a memory card. 70% of your course grade will come from the effort you will put and the quality of work that you will be able to produce.
INSTRUCTOR: Photographer Androniki Christodoulou, a Tokyo-based professional photographer who is mainly documenting life in Japan and Japanese culture. Her work is published in international magazines and newspapers.
PRESENTATION: Digital presentations/projections with photos by professional photographers will be presented in the class.
COMMUNICATION: Because of the limited time of this workshop and for making the most out of it, it is important that the students bring their work at the class for commenting regularly.
