This course is designed to give students insight into both the theory and practice of modern dance. Works from the repertory of Pina Bausch and other important creators of modern dance will be analyzed and discussed, to determine the elements that go into them. We must develop the qualities which make us the humans we are, which make us so different and so much more than the machines that we build.
Individual expression is at the heart of performance.
The workshopping and the lectures will be integrated so that students can further understand the spirit and performance of dance. Students will be expected to create short sequences of dance theatre choreography
based on what they have heard and seen. This year, part of the research and creative work will be focused on the poetic work of Miyazawa Kenji.
The subjects of my course will be focused on the following points:
*The concept of circulation of energy in body movements and practice. (Each class will propose a range of body exercise to assist the student in understanding the body and the use of artistic body language.)
*The discovery of a non-verbal language following open and flexible rules.
*Choreographic composition in modern dance and in dance-theatre.
*How to adapt yourself to the unexpected; keeping curiosity alive.
*Introduction to Dance and Theatre. An analysis of the evolution of
dance and theatre from the classical to modern.
*Introduction to improvisation in dance, in music, and in dance-theatre.
