講義概要

In this course the students will produce mainly three-dimensional artworks. Beginning with the human body up to abstract sculpture, they will expand their practical knowledge in using various materials and the ways of personal expression in the three-dimensional space. In a lecture, at the beginning of each class, the works of important and most influential artists of the 20th century will be presented with a slide-show and hand-outs, and will inspire the following workshop. At the end of this course the students will have the chance to present their artworks in a group exhibition.

講義の目的

The students will learn various ways in how to express themselves in three-dimensional artworks, experimenting with various means and materials. They will achieve advanced and sensitive knowledge about the history of modern Western sculpture of the 20th century.

講義計画

The class meets on four Saturdays, May 28, June 4 / 11 / 18, from 10.30 to 17.30 (lunch break included)

1) "Creation Never Ends"
Lecture: The many revolutionary changes in the sculptures of Pablo Picasso
Workshop: We will produce sculptures using clay and other materials.

2) "From Surrealism to the Eternal Being"
Lecture: The transformations in the sculptures of Alberto Giacometti.
Workshop: We will work with a living model, producing a sculpture of the human body, using clay.

3) "Revaluating the World"
Lecture: The metal trash-sculptures of Kurt Schwitters and the DADA-movement
Workshop: We will produce three-dimensional objects with personal items and random materials.

4) "Up to Heaven"
Lecture: The floating sculptures of Alexander Calder
Workshop: Reflecting upon gravity, air and space, we will produce three-dimensional objects with diverse materials.

The regular attendance of lecture and workshop, participation, diligence and artworks will be graded.
