Advanced Oral Expression in English AI2 is designed to help students to express themselves in a variety of settings ranging from study abroad programs and job interviews, to daily encounters with international students and professors here on the Tokyo Tech campus.
It is not a lecture-style course. Students will be working together in pairs and small groups to create a learning community wherein everybody’s voice is valued and respected. Students will be encouraged to borrow from each other’s strengths to overcome their individual weaknesses.
Most classes will follow a four-step cycle. To begin, students will be asked to discuss a topic together. This topic will then be linked to a particular grammar or communication point. Next, students will practice in a controlled situation, before being given the freedom to apply all that they have learnt in a presentation, debate, or discussion.
Topics will include advertising, social issues and speculation. Grammar and communicative points will cover presentation skills, constructing balanced arguments and academic vs. informal language.
Lessons will be based upon the textbook New Headway - Upper Intermediate. Although this book will be used in each class, the most important resource will be the students’ themselves - their ideas, experiences and imaginations.
Since this class is an advanced class, you are expected to already have a general, working knowledge of English. Equally essential, however, is a strong desire to express yourselves in English.
There will be no final exam for this course. Grades will be decided by three homework assignments, attendance and the participants’ efforts to express themselves in English.
During this semester, we will create a community wherein every participant’s voice is valued. We all have different strengths and weaknesses(grammar, vocabulary, confidence, pronunciation), so in this class, we will be sharing our knowledge to Improve the abilities of us all.
