Outline of lecture

Through this course, regular students (Japanese and Int窶冤) and exchange students from overseas partner universities are expected to deepen their understanding of Japan and the Japanese society in comparison with other countries through lectures, discussions, presentations and visit to a relevant place. All classes will be conducted in English.
Topics on Japan (TOJ)I mainly deals with basic knowledge of Japan such as history and education, while TOJ II, starting from April, aims at deepening students窶 understanding of Japan further. In the middle of TOJ I course, students are expected to make a group presentation on 窶弄y country and university/home town窶 to promote mutual understanding.
Students are encouraged to exchange with classmates of different nationalities from theirs and to understand other values and cultures than their own.

Purpose of lecture

Objective

1. Oct.6: Introduction of the course and new students. To know each other.
2. Oct.13:Basic knowledge on Japan and the Japanese society
3. Oct.20:History and Culture of Japan
4. Oct.25 (Mon.): Special lecture on "Women in Medieval Japan: Fulfillment and Constraint" by Prof. Alison Tokita from 15:00 to 16:30 at the Lounge of the International Student Center (West Bldg.1)
5. Nov. 3: No class (national holiday)
6. Nov.10: Students' Presentation on 窶廴y country and my university/home town (1)窶(open seminar style, inviting other Tokyo students and guest audience)
7. Nov.17: Students' Presentation on 窶廴y country and my university/home town (2)窶
8. Nov.24: Students' Presentation on 窶廴y country and my university/home town (3)窶
9. Dec.1: Students' Presentation on 窶廴y country and my university/home town (4)窶
10. Dec.8: Education of Japan
11. Dec.15: Visit to Chisetsu Elementary School (From 10:30 am to 14:00 pm)
12. Dec. 22: History of Tokyo Tech (Guest Lecturer)
13. Jan.12: Economic Development of Japan (1)
14. Jan.19: Economic Development of Japan (2)
15. Jan.26: Wrap up discussion on 窶彜trength and weakness of the Japanese society窶

Textbook and reference

Teaching Materials and presentation requirement: There is no specific text in this course. Some references will be introduced during the course according to the topics.

Related and/or prerequisite courses

Condition for taking this course: If the number of regular students exceeds the number of exchange students, selection of participants will be conducted based on their motivation and English ability. Participating students are expected to make presentations and write reports in English.

Evaluation

Evaluation: Regular class attendance and positive participation in the discussion are highly expected. Class participation and presentation 60%,reports 40%

1.Class attendance: attendance is expected at all cス径ss meetings. Those who come to the class 30 minutes after the start of the class or leave it 30 minutes before the end of the class will obtain only half of the attendance points.

2.Presentation: In the middle of the course, a group of exchange and regular students are requested to make a presentation on 窶弄y country and my university/home town窶, in front of other students and guest audience. Some students will be asked to join the group as 窶歪ommentators/supporters窶 who will introduce the country from the viewpoint of foreigners. Each presentation group is requested to convert the presentation files into html file, which will be uploaded on the web site of the International Student Center.

3.Report:
縲縲1) Topic:窶strength and weakness of Japan in comparison with other countries窶
縲縲2) Length: from 600 to 1000 words in English.
縲縲3) Deadline: January 31st midnight (Late submission will decrease your report points. Please keep the deadline.)
縲縲4) Style: Please note that you have to write your name, country and student number on the right shoulder of the first page of your report.
縲縲5) Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. If such an act is found, you will obtain no points for your report.
縲縲6.Submission: Please hand the report to the teacher in the class or send it to her by e-mail as an attached file. When you send your report by e-mail, the teacher will send you the confirmation of its receipt. If you don't receive her confirmation within one week, you are requested to contact the teacher again since the report might be missing. Please bring your report to her office (#206 of West 1 Bldg.) or call the teacher (03-5734-3524, fax is the same number) in that case.
