Outline of lecture

This course provides an introduction in preparing and designing ESD research projects for integration across the curriculum. In this regard the concepts and origin of ESD will be introduced. Students will be engaged in researching ESD projects related to their own area of specialization in a multidisciplinary R&D environment.

Purpose of lecture

The main purpose of this course is to provide the students窶 with an understanding of ESD policy and implementation through student centered collaborative research projects. This will be achieved through raising the student窶冱 awareness of UNESCO窶冱 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implications for technical institutions and the associated industries.

The course learning objectives are as follows:
On completion of this course participating students will be able to:

1. Develop the generic learning skills given in the overall program learning objectives;

2. Apply the concept of ESD for engineering education;

3. Relate engineering education to UNESCO窶冱 Millennium Development Goals and the contemporary move towards Sustainable Development Goals;

4. Propose an ESD group-based project related to a chosen multi-disciplinary area and personal/group interest;

5. Use collaborative online tools to research, co-author and report about the chosen ESD team-based project; and,

6. Present coursework through an evidence-based reflective eportfolio.

Plan of lecture

Session 1:
Introduction to the course and the participants, learning objectives and eAssessment;
Session 2:
Defining the concept of ESD and understanding its role in engineering education;
Session 3:
Understanding the shift from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
Session 4:
Developing an ESD project across specialist subject areas;
Session 5:
Collaborative report writing of ESD projects using online tools; and,
Session 6:
Plenary (Presentation, feedback and discussion of performance for future improvement).

Textbook and reference

No prescribed textbook. Open Educational Resources (OERs) will be used as given online.

Related and/or prerequisite courses

It is expected that students have some competency in English and have enrolled onto the 窶廾nline Learning and ePortfolio窶 course.

Evaluation

Evaluation of this online flexible learning course will mainly be conducted through a student led self-assessment report of learning activities. Collaborative group work linked to reflective feedback demonstrating thinking skills and the use of ICT tools to support critical and creative thinking will also be a core emphasis of self-evaluation.

This approach will reflect Achievement based Assessment for Learning using an online learning eportfolio containing the evidence of the learning activities as a form of eAssessment for course credit. The overall distribution of the marks are allocated to the learning activities as given in below:

Online Communication
Collaborative eTools
Reflection Evidence
Organisation & Presentation
Quality Enhancement

The Pass Mark is 60%

Comments from lecturer

This course will be offered in a blended learning mode including both face to face and an online learning environment. All the course materials and activities will be available online.
The generic learning objectives are common to all five GSD courses:
Develop generic educational and academic skills of the wider Global Skills Development program within the medium of English Communication learning activities with reference to leveraging:
1. The student窶冱 knowledge
2. Critical reflection of learning experiences
3. Expression of concepts and ideas
4. Interaction with others in both face-to-face and virtual environments
5. Values, culture and ethics
