講義概要

The overall emphasis is to link the field of systems thinking with developing students’ critical thinking, creativity and problem solving skills. In this course students’ will be introduced to the conceptual framework of system thinking (theories and analysis) with using ICT tools both offline and online so as to elicit new knowledge from problem solving activities leading to creative solutions.

講義の目的

The main purpose of this course is to provide the students’ with an overview of the field of systems thinking. This will include an introduction to tools to help solve real world problems related to their own area of study linked to their subject major.

The course learning objectives are as follows:
On completion of this course participating students will be able to:

1. Develop the generic learning skills given in the overall program learning objectives;

2. Identify and define systems thinking in terms of its main process-based models;

3. Link systems thinking with problem based learning;

4. Interpret and analyse systems thinking in terms of problem based solutions;

5. Apply systems thinking solutions to engineering contexts including the world of work; and,

6. Develop personal skills of using systems thinking tools within projects.

講義計画

Session 1: Introduction to the course and the participants, learning objectives and eAssessment.
Session 2:
Defining systems thinking and problem-based learning.
Session 3: Techniques of systems thinking applied to real world situations.
Session 4: Applying systems thinking towards developing problem solving strategies across the engineering curriculum.
Session 5: Using and applying systems thinking tools for a project.
Session 6: Plenary (Presentation, feedback and discussion of performance for future improvement).

教科書・参考書等

No prescribed textbook. Open Educational Resources (OERs) will be used as given online.

関連科目・履修の条件等

It is expected that students have some competency in English and have enrolled onto the "Online Learning and ePortfolio" course.

成績評価

Evaluation of this online flexible learning course will mainly be conducted through a student led self-assessment report of learning activities. Collaborative group work linked to reflective feedback demonstrating thinking skills and the use of ICT tools to support critical and creative thinking will also be a core emphasis of self-evaluation. This approach will reflect Achievement based Assessment for Learning using an online learning eportfolio containing the evidence of the learning activities as a form of eAssessment for course credit.

The overall distribution of the marks are allocated to the learning activities as given below:

Online Communication
Collaborative eTools
Reflection Evidence
Organisation & Presentation
Quality Enhancement

The Pass Mark is 60%

担当教員の一言

This course will be offered in a blended learning mode including both face to face and an online learning environment. All the course materials and activities will be available online.
The generic learning objectives are common to all five GSD courses:
Develop generic educational and academic skills of the wider Global Skills Development program within the medium of English Communication learning activities with reference to leveraging:
1. The student’s knowledge
2. Critical reflection of learning experiences
3. Expression of concepts and ideas
4. Interaction with others in both face-to-face and virtual environments
5. Values, culture and ethics
